Ashton Marine, LLC has had a busy start to 2018 by breaking ice to extend the busy shipping season.
We started by breaking ice for the Joseph L. Block and the Prentiss Brown in Grand Haven, MI.
From there we mobilized to Holland, MI to break out the channel for the Undaunted/PM41. With the cold winter conditions, this proved to be a little more challenging. The brash ice was anywhere from 4’ to 8’ thick and packed between the Holland break wall arms. It took nearly 8 hours of backing and ramming to go 100 yards to get in the channel. Early the next morning, we were able to keep a path open, which allowed the tug/barge unit to make it out to open water in Lake Michigan.
Ashton Marine hosted over 40 people consisting of Family, Friends and Employees for lunch on the Tug “Candace Elise”. The day consisted of a tour of Muskegon Lake, Muskegon Channel and Lake Michigan. All age groups were represented from 2 1/2 year old Carter Dean to 86 year old John Bronsema. The highlight of the tour came when Jack (6) and Tyler (8) piloted the tug, “Candace Elise” through the Muskegon Channel. All in all, it was a great day. We are so excited to announce that we are building two 200’ x 35’ x 15’ ABS Great Lakes loadlined hopper barges. These barges will primarily be used on the Great Lakes where they can transport up to 1900 tons of cargo per barge. The unique size of these barges will give customers access to the river system without the cost of transloading into standard river hopper barges. Delivery is expected in mid August of this year. For further information contact Seth Andrie at (231) 220 – 5530 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Ashton Marine, LLC participated in the Maritime Career Day in Muskegon, which 70 students from area high schools attended. The career day gave students a chance to tour several vessels, including two tug boats and a 600-foot-long barge used to transport coal, sand and stones among other materials.
Here’s a video of the students having fun working the fire cannon aboard the Tug Candace Elise.
Ashton Marine, LLC has been busy in the winter 2015/2016 with obtaining fresh certificates for our Tug Candace Elise. Both the 5 – year dry docking for our ABS Loadline and our three year Sub-Chapter M sticker have been renewed. Other improvements include adding a heating system for the winter months and a remote power temperature and humidity alarm system to monitor the status of our tug during the winter lay-up months.
May 2015 – Ashton Marine, LLC purchased the Tug Candace Elise (formally Stephen Dann) from Dann Ocean Towing out of Tampa, FL. The 106’ x 32’ x 14’ – 2600 HP tug will be used to perform marine transportation on the Great Lakes, ship assists, barge towing, transport oversized cargo, liquid and dry bulk products, and salvage projects on the Great Lakes.
The 2900 mile trip from New York City to our home base in Muskegon, MI will take about 2 weeks. Once the tug arrives in Muskegon the crew will begin the 2 month retrofitting project to get her ready for the Great Lakes transportation projects.
