Ice Breaking In January 2018

Ice Breaking In January 2018

Ashton Marine, LLC has had a busy start to 2018 by breaking ice to extend the busy shipping season.

We started by breaking ice for the Joseph L. Block and the Prentiss Brown in Grand Haven, MI.

From there we mobilized to Holland, MI to break out the channel for the Undaunted/PM41.  With the cold winter conditions, this proved to be a little more challenging.  The brash ice was anywhere from 4’ to 8’ thick and packed between the Holland break wall arms.  It took nearly 8 hours of backing and ramming to go 100 yards to get in the channel. Early the next morning, we were able to keep a path open, which allowed the tug/barge unit to make it out to open water in Lake Michigan.
